For whatever reason, Max was preoccupied with OTHER, MORE IMPORTANT business, and Lee was out with Cassandra, so... it seemed that Lava was the go-to horse at the moment. She hadn’t spent much time with Eugene, the black mare often keeping to a very small circle of people after the, er-- INCIDENT involving her and Lee assisting Varian with his plan to kidnap the queen. It wasn’t that Lava didn’t TRUST others, she was simply afraid they wouldn’t trust HER. 

Or maybe it was just Lee they didn’t trust. Either way--

The mare shifted beneath the man, chomping the bit in her mouth. She wasn’t used to wearing anything over her head, but she would tolerate it if it made him feel SAFE. Eyes rolled and a loud HUFF sounded from her.

It was odd to spend time with someone other than Lee, but the mare very much enjoyed it. Bear was... new-ish. New because she didn’t know him as well as Lee, but also ISH because, well, they’d left and COME BACK, and now Lava felt as if she had to learn some things about him all over again. Lee seemed determined to stay here now, STAY WITH BEAR, and the mare didn’t know what that really meant just yet. Were they going to live this life forever? Were they never going to dive back into what Lee referred to as ‘hero work’?

I have never had any expectations for life. I never expected to be living. She supposed that was what everyone experienced-- nobody ever asked for life, they were just given it. An unwanted gift, more so in Lava’s case. The horse’s tail swished, and she laid flat onto her side with a groan, hoping that she didn’t disturb Bear, who was sitting with his back propped against her barrel. 

I do not know how you imagined life, but... I hope it was something like what we are doing now. Laying in the grass in the clearing behind the gas station, staring up at the clearest blue sky the golem had ever seen, with Bear-- someone who Lee seemed to love an awful lot, though she was having quite the hard time ADMITTING TO IT.

I like this life. I did not mind the life we had before you, but I like with you. You and Lee. Lee and you. It is nice. The mare sighed heavily, side heaving, her pink eyes softly close. You changed things. Lee is not so angry. Scared. I know this is because of you. I do not know how you did it, because I HAVE BEEN TRYING... 

I am happy, Bear. I hope you are, too.

SOMETHING WAS WRONG-- the mare could feel it. She was practically vibrating, RADIATING heat, head raised to its highest height, surveying her surroundings. A SCREAM. Lava’s chipped ear swiveled to catch the sound, and instantly, she was off like a rocket in the general direction of the noise. Nostrils flared and steel hooves POUNDED against the pavement, sparks flying as she rounded corners, dodging pedestrians, nearly missing being HIT BY MULTIPLE CARS.

But she simply HAD TO FIGURE OUT where that sound was coming from. 

When she did, the mare DIDN’T LIKE WHAT SHE SAW. Sliding to a CRASHING HALT, bouncing off of a dumpster and sending trash bags flying as she entered the alleyway. There was a WOMAN on the ground, a man had GRABBED her... and the black horse began to SCREAM BLOODY MURDER.

Her jaw cracked open MUCH WIDER than a normal horse’s should have been able to; the hollow, distorted screams that sounded from Lava’s mouth grew LOUDER as she came closer, rearing up to her full height on her hind legs, hooves flailing at the attacker until they backed down, dropped the woman and ran. BUT THAT WASN’T GOOD EOUGH--

LAUNCHING after the man, snaking her head and neck, the mare’s bared teeth managed to CATCH the back of his jacket, but only enough to tear it. He didn’t get away completely unscathed, but more so than she’d intended. Content to watch him RUN, Lava stood with pinned ears, upper lip raised, making damn well sure that HE WAS NEVER COMING BACK.

AND I COME FROM DEATH. Lava sits with a loud thud, head tilting to the side as she watched the woman, an ear flicking back. Though she does not know exactly what Cora has been through, she feels like SHE UNDERSTANDS.

I am not an easy creature to comprehend. I am not alive. I am not dead. I am part human. I am rock. I am horse. Death made me, and... it seems to follow me. Lava sighs heavily, head lowering, a melancholy rumble leaving her throat. You do not destroy everything, I know this.

I love your kids. I did not know what love was before I met them. THEY ARE YOUR LEGACY. Love. Love is your legacy.

THE STATEMENT ISN’T MEANT TO BE A COMFORT. Lava even wonders if maybe Cassandra FORGETS that she is talking to an animal; there are many an occasion on which someone spoke to the mare not realizing that she could UNDERSTAND THEM. Humans seemed to take some solace in knowing that the creature they were speaking to COULD NOT RESPOND. However... 

LAVA COULD.

Then you are very lucky. Lava’s muzzle presses against Cassandra’s cheek, the black mare’s breath hot against her. The black mare has witnessed so much, a silent observer. You have many friends. People who love you. 

If we are to value life based on the friendships we form, then I think maybe you have a very good one.

||..YES !! Lava is definitely the type of horse who would just lay flat on her side in the sun and make people think she’s dead. 

Lava is a very toasty girl in the sun lol. Real black or dark-colored horses tend to heat up quite a bit in the sun (my OTTB is a very dark bay, almost black, and he gets very warm unless he has a fly sheet on,) so I can imagine Lava would probably be even WORSE bc y’know.... R O C K

The exposed rock parts of her are mainly her underbelly and lower legs, but with the rest of her body being almost, like.... a layer of skin and hair over rock, she’d still probably get pretty hot. Think ‘pavement on a hot day’ kind of hot lol

I’ll also add that Lava’s muzzle sometimes gets SUNBURNT. If she lays out in the sun for too long, the white marking on her muzzle (the part directly between her nostrils) will occasionally get sunburnt. If Lee knows that Lava is going to be lounging around outside on a hot day, she will put sunscreen on the mare’s muzzle.

“Ohhhhhh, I like Salem. Salem is a good boy. Lots of smiles; not just from him. He makes everyone around him smile. We play! He has taught me the game of fetch! 

Sometimes, I sneak into his and Lee’s apartment, and I steal his clothes. I hide them. I have five shirts.”

“I am... CONFLICTED. Trevor was... is... lost. In more ways than one. I did not mean to hurt him, as I am sure that he did not mean to... hurt US. I was scared. I was in pain. I was blinded by RAGE, and I had to protect my person. We cannot live without each other, and he was a threat. 

Things should not have gone as far as they did. I do not fully remember what happened. But I do remember how I felt-- I am told it is called REGRET. I had never... experienced it before. I could not look at Lee for weeks afterwards. I know she does not blame me, but I blame myself. 

Trevor made no move to attack. I am not even sure what he really wanted. Maybe he was there to cause pain, but I did not stop to ask. I should have. Things would be different now if maybe I had.”
